Here are five other times Hollywood institutions came under frightening attack:

1. The Post-9/11 Anthrax Scare. Just days after the 2001 terror attacks, the Manhattan offices of ABC, NBC and CBS were jolted anew by the discovery of letters laced with the potentially deadly toxin. Those infected included the infant child of an ABC News staffer. An apparently unrelated anthrax threat rattled A-list types in 2008.

2. The Pat Robertson Letter Bomb. In 1990, a letter bomb addressed to the televangelist exploded in the mailroom of his Christian Broadcasting Network. One person, a network security guard, was injured.

3. The CBS Gunman. In 2002, the network’s famed Television City complex in Los Angeles was evacuated, and taping on The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful halted, after an armed man barged into the mailroom. A police standoff ensued, and ended only when the suspect shot himself.

4. The CNBC Blackout. In 1998, the business network went dark for about 90 minutes after its New Jersey studio was cleared due to a bomb threat. No explosive devices were found.

5. The Planet Hollywood Explosion. In 1998, a terror group targeted the Cape Town, South Africa, outpost of the Bruce Willis-, Arnold Schwarzenegger- and Sylvester Stallone-founded restaurant chain. One person was killed in the blast.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Something as simple as a piece of clothing can transport viewers to another place and time.

Historical garments reveal stories from the past and shed light on a different way of life.

“Stitches in Time: Tarleton’s Historical Fashion Collection” opens Mon., Jan. 12, at Tarleton State University’s Clyde H. Wells Fine Art Center Gallery.

The exhibit features historical garments from the 1850s to the 1910s and appeal to historians as well as theatergoers and antiques lovers.

Jenny Saxton, faculty member at Tarrant County Community College and former visiting assistant professor at Tarleton, and Minsu Kim, assistant professor of human sciences at Tarleton who specializes in clothing and textiles, will provide their expertise on the subject of historical clothing.

Tarleton owns the collection of hundreds of garments, which were donated during the years by family members of the people who wore the clothing. When not on exhibit, the garments are stored in acid-free textile boxes for preservation.

The fabric is so delicate that Saxton and Kim wore gloves when handling the clothing to protect it from oils in the skin that could damage the garments.

One of the most distinct aspects of Tarleton’s collection is that it features common, everyday clothing.

“You see a lot of wedding dresses, but it is rare to find common clothes,” Saxton said. “Decorative clothing would more likely be preserved, but not everyday clothing.”

One piece on display is a simple blue dress with a white accent. Complementing the dress is a tan, worn-thin apron speckled with stains.

“People would wear their everyday clothing until it wore out, and then they would cut it up and use it for other purposes,” Kim said. “For the material to have survived this long is amazing.”

Also in the collection is a formal long-sleeve black dress with accents of white and blue. A bright red bodice on the dress is enhanced with a lace overlay.

From simple dresses and smoking jackets to ornate beading and lacework, the exhibit lets viewers witness first-hand the history of the materials, the variety in the designs and the skillfulness of their execution.

“Stitches in Time” runs from Jan. 12 to Feb. 6. The gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. It is free and open to the public. For more information, log on to www.tarleton.edu/~fineartcenter or call (254) 968-9291.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—A Tarleton State University professor and two Stephenville Independent School District (SISD) physical education instructors recently spoke about a collaborative fitness effort at a convention in Austin.

Dr. Joe Gillespie, Jill Heupel and Wade Whitehead were invited to speak about FITNESSGRAM, a partnership between Stephenville ISD and Tarleton, at the Texas Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Convention in Austin on Feb. 9.

The fitness collaboration began during the 1980s with Gillespie taking his Tests and Measurements class to Gilbert Intermediate School to assist the public schools with health-related fitness testing.

Senate Bill 530 was passed in 2008 and mandated that all public schools in the state assess the health-related fitness of students in grades three through 12. SISD and Tarleton have been the leaders in the state with the implementation of the law, and many surrounding school districts have looked to the collaboration for assistance.

Heupel, Whitehead, Mary Pack, Emma Jimenez, D’Anna Green and Mike Carroll from SISD have worked with Tarleton students to implement the program.

For many years, students in Dr. Gillespie’s class have administered the FITNESSGRAM to all students in grades four through six. Now, the collaboration involves second through 12th grade.

Following testing of students, a fitness report card is issued for each public school student.

Developed by the Cooper Institute in Dallas, the FITNESSGRAM test measures three areas of fitness: aerobic capacity, body composition, muscle strength, endurance and flexibility. The test results help parents and physical education teachers identify students whose poor fitness may compromise their heath and education.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—The Coy L. Watson Class of 1939 Endowed Fund was created to benefit students from Young County, Texas, who are studying geoscience or agriculture.

Watson, a Tarleton State University alumnus, bequeathed $48,000 to the Tarleton State University Foundation, Inc. in memory of his parents Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Watson and family of loved ones. The Tarleton Foundation is a public non-profit organization established in 1978 to provide financial assistance to Tarleton primarily from earnings on endowed funds, gifts or property. The Foundation acts independently of the university and The Texas A&M University System solely for the benefit of Tarleton.

“Through collaborative efforts between Tarleton and the Tarleton Foundation, we are able to ensure the donors’ philanthropic wishes are achieved while providing greater financial opportunities for our students,” said Sabra Guerra, Tarleton’s director of development.

The Coy L. Watson Class of 1939 endowment will benefit full-time Tarleton students based on financial need with preference given to students who are graduates of a high school located in Young County, which includes Bunger, Eliasville, Graham, Jean, Loving, Markley, Murray, Newcastle, Olney, Padgett, Proffitt, South Bend and Twin Mountains.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—The Tarleton State University Rodeo Program and Wranglers are hosting the 13th annual Shawn McMullan Memorial Calf Roping and Breakaway Roping on Feb. 22. The event will be held at the Tarleton practice arena just off the Lingleville Highway in Stephenville.

This event is held each year in honor of Shawn McMullan, a well-known and loved Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) tie-down roper. Unfortunately, McMullan was tragically killed in a car accident while traveling from one rodeo to another. He was known for being polite, friendly and a real credit to the sport of rodeo.

McMullan attended Odessa College and Tarleton on rodeo scholarships before entering into the professional ranks of rodeo. In 1996, he was awarded the “Fan’s Favorite Cowboy.” In his short rodeo career he won championship titles at Houston, El Paso, San Angelo, and Calgary as well qualifying for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) several times.

Each year proceeds from the memorial roping help the Tarleton rodeo program provide a scholarship to a timed-event cowboy or cowgirl in memory of Shawn McMullen. Recipient must maintain full-time student status (12 or more semester hours) and be an active member of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association.

Bob Doty, Tarleton’s former rodeo coach, reported that during the 12th annual Shawn McMullan Memorial Roping and Lady Wrangler Breakaway Roping had 138 cowboys and cowgirls participate at this event, which added $5,000 to the school’s rodeo funds.

Every year, the McMullen Roping brings in many World Champion PRCA calf ropers, NFR qualifiers, Texas Circuit Champions, College National Finals Rodeo qualifiers and even National High School Finals Rodeo qualifiers. Previous event champions include such top names as Cody Ohl, Trent Walls, Terry Kitchens, Timber Moore, Bill Warner, Jeff Yates, Tim Pharr, Bradley Bynum, Joseph Gernatz, Jennifer Smith-Driver, JJ Hampton, Jill Childers-Jameson, Kylee Burris and Shelby Smith.

In 2008, Stephenville was the proud home to both the tie-down roping and breakaway champions. Timber Moore won the tie-down roping average and collected more than $3,600 and with a bronze sculpture. Shelby Smith won the breakaway roping and won $1,100 as well as a buckle.

The event has $1,000 in added money and the average winner will receive a David Barnes tie-down roping saddle. The tie-down roping format will be two head and a short round for $350.

The breakaway roping has $500 dollars in added money and a buckle to the average winner. The breakaway roping format will be two head and a short round for $180. New this year, the Equibrand Corporation will donate Classic Equine and Rattler ropes as prizes in both ropings.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Boston will meet Tarleton State University onstage for a night of music.

World-class musician Douglas Yeo, principal bass trombonist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, will perform with Tarleton’s Wind Ensemble at 7:30 p.m. on March 4 in the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center Auditorium.

Yeo has been a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra since 1985. He also has been involved extensively in teaching, serving on the faculty of New England Conservatory of Music.

Yeo has written more than 30 articles on the trombone and orchestral playing for numerous publications including “The International Musician,” “The Instrumentalist” and “The Brass Herald.” He has become a leading exponent of historical brasses, having played as soloist, in chamber ensembles and in orchestras.

The program includes Gordon Langford’s “Proclamation” for bass trombone and wind ensemble, Robert Spittal’s “Pacem — A Hymn for Peace,” John Philip Sousa’s “The Black Horse Troop” and Yo Goto’s “Funiculi, Funicula Rhapsody.”

The Wind Ensemble is conducted by Dr. Reginald M. Houze, interim assistant professor and director of bands. Jonathan Hooper, who recently retired as director of bands at Tarleton after 25 years, will step up to the podium during the concert to guest conduct. Richard L. Bahner, Tarleton’s associate director of bands, also will guest conduct.

A “Meet the Artists” reception will follow the performance.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Dr. Sam E. Curl, Tarleton State University graduate, recently received an Outstanding Agriculturalist award at the annual Pig Roast at Texas Tech University.

The “Pig Roast” is an event at Texas Tech where the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources faculty, students and administration honor teams and individuals who distinguished themselves during the past year.

The Outstanding Agriculturalist Award recognizes members who contribute to agricultural history and are successful in his or her profession and other activities.

Three people are chosen to receive the award each year: one for agricultural production, one for agribusiness and one for public service. The nominees are accepted from former Outstanding Agriculturist recipients, administration and faculty of the College of Agriculture Sciences and Natural Resources.

Curl received the Agriculturalist Award for Public Service for 2008 for his accomplishments throughout his life. He graduated from Tarleton College in 1957 with a junior college diploma, went on to receive his bachelor’s degree from Sam Houston State University, his master’s degree in animal genetics from the University of Missouri and his doctorate in animal physiology from Texas A&M University.

Curl has been awarded distinguished alumnus awards from the University of Missouri and Sam Houston State University. He has authored or co-authored three books and 95 scientific or technical publications. He has held leadership positions in agricultural organizations including dean of the colleges of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at Texas Tech and Oklahoma State University.

Since retiring in July 2004, Curl works for Tarleton as executive assistant to the provost and also for the Ag Workers Mutual Auto Insurance Company in Fort Worth.

GRANBURY, TEXAS—Big Daddy & the Butter Biscuits is returning to Tarleton State University’s Dora Lee Langdon Cultural and Educational Center to perform a musical review of old and new favorites.

The event will be at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, at the Langdon Center Concert Hall. Tickets are $10.

Royce Cooper (Big Daddy) and Peggy Bott-Kirby and Heatherton Hardy-Wilson (the Butter Biscuits) are veteran Granbury Opera House performers.

The group has performed at conventions, festivals, benefits and theater venues including Bass Hall, creating a large following all over the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

Cooper is a pianist, arranger, singer and director. During the years, he has directed and played at hundreds of venues. He has founded and performed with several highly successful and critically acclaimed cabaret acts including Howard and the Fine Sisters and Big Daddy and the Butter Biscuits.

Hardy-Wilson has been a long-time theater professional with her first performance at age 12 in “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” at the Dallas Theater Center. She and Cooper are longtime friends who have performed together in a variety of acts during the years.

Bott-Kirby joined the group two years ago. She has performed as a musical director, vocal coach and at multiple venues in the Fort Worth area. She has taught classes and workshops in creative expression, voice, mime and theater arts.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—A Tarleton State University associate professor was one of 11 recently appointed by Texas Gov. Rick Perry to serve on the Continuing Advisory Committee for Special Education.

As one of those selected, Dr. Diane Taylor, coordinator of Tarleton’s special education program, will provide policy guidance with respect to special education and related services for children with disabilities in Texas.

“I am very honored to be appointed to this important committee,” Taylor said. “I look forward to working with other individuals across the state who are passionate about the education of children with disabilities in Texas.”

Taylor replaces Laura Stough of Cedar Creek for a term that expires on Feb. 1, 2013.

The Continuing Advisory Committee consists of 17 members and advises the Texas Education Agency of unmet needs within the state about educating children with disabilities.

Taylor is a member of the International Association of Special Education and the Council for Exceptional Children. She also served on the Academy for Educator Development and the Texas A&M University System Regents’ Initiative for Excellence in Education as faculty member.

The Stephenville native is a former special education teacher, educational diagnostician and special education director. She received her bachelor’s degree from Tarleton and both her master’s and doctorate degree in special education from the University of North Texas.

“I am delighted that Governor Perry has appointed Dr. Taylor to the Continuing Advisory Committee for Special Education as she will bring a wealth of experiences to this assignment and provide an important higher education perspective,” said Dr. Jill Burk, Tarleton’s dean of the College of Education. “Tarleton will benefit from Dr. Taylor’s participation as she will be able to share the most current state-level special education policy initiatives with our students, faculty and administration.”

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Dr. Don Cawthon was recently voted as the president of the American Association of State Colleges of Agriculture and Renewable Resources (AASCARR) for the 2008-2009 year at the organization’s annual conference held at Murray State University in Kentucky.

Cawthon is the dean of the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences at Tarleton State University and resident director of The Texas A&M System AgriLife Research and Extension Center in Stephenville.

Cawthon has a bachelor’s in horticulture, master’s in horticultural food science and doctorate in food science. He has received state, regional and national awards for research such as the Krezdorn Award for Excellence in Doctoral Research, the Joseph Harvey Gourley Award for Excellence in Research and the Texas Governor’’s Environmental Excellence Award for Agriculture.

Cawthon joined as a member of AASCARR in 1989 and has served on its board of directors for three terms, chaired the membership committee and served on the legislative affairs committee.

As president, Cawthon will supervise meetings and direct matters concerning the association’s business, be responsible for contact with other professional organizations and appoint members to fill vacant offices until the next annual meeting.

AASCARR is composed of almost 50 state colleges and public non-land grant universities. Their goal is to create an organization of publicly supported colleges and universities offering baccalaureate degree programs in agriculture, renewable natural resources and related disciplines.

The organization provides career advising and mentoring as well as extracurricular clubs, activities and intercollegiate teams to help develop professional leadership skills in graduates.

James Wilson, 68, of Stephenville, was a passenger in an eastbound Chevrolet Cavalier that was attempting to turn north on College Farm Road from Hwy 8 when the vehicle was struck by a westbound Chevrolet Silverado that was hauling a flatbed trailer.

“Basically (the driver) tried to turn left and didn’t have enough time,” Stephenville Police Officer Brandon Boen, who was investigating the wreck, said.
The Cavalier was driven by Ouida Hise, 78, of Stephenville. Hise was taken via ambulance to the airport, where Care Flite transported her to a Fort Worth hospital.

The Silverado was driven by 40-year-old David Wilson, no relation to James Wilson, of Stephenville.

Tarleton State University President F. Dominic Dottavio and Dr. Koy Floyd, vice president of institutional advancement, met last week (Feb. 20) to discuss how President Obama’s stimulus plan could impact Tarleton. Below are some of the questions posed and President Dottavio’s answers.

l. What are the implications of the economic stimulus bill for higher education in general and Tarleton specifically?

It is my understanding that the bill contains provisions for state budgeting shortfalls, financial aid, tax credits, research lab construction, repair and renovation projects, scientific and energy research projects, teacher education programs, adult education and job training.

Taken as a whole, the stimulus bill could have an enormous impact on higher education. As far as Tarleton is concerned, we are awaiting direction from the Governor’s office, since he has not determined the extent to which Texas will participate. Once that information is shared and direction is given from the Texas A&M Chancellor’s office, we will analyze specifically how the total bill will affect our programs.

2. The bill includes funds to increase financial aid for students through increased Pell Grants. How will that affect Tarleton students?

We don’t know exactly what the total effect will be; however, the bill provides $17.1 billion nationally for Pell Grants and increases the maximum available by $500 for each student. Tarleton’s Pell Grant awards for the current year will exceed $8.5 million with 2,695 students receiving assistance. If these figures hold, we should realize a $1,347,500 increase for our students.

Presently, the maximum Pell Grant limit a student in any university in the nation can receive is $4,731 and it varies down to $890 based on need. As I understand the bill, the new maximum would be at or near $5,231.

3. Are there other student aid programs included in the stimulus bill that will benefit students at Tarleton?

The bill includes an increase of $200 million for the nationwide College Work Study program. We have 85 students that are part of our College Work Study program and our annual pay roll is $250,000. At this time we can’t predict exactly how the stimulus package will impact Tarleton students on the College Work Study program but it will be minimal.

4. Does the stimulus bill contain funds to supplement shortfalls and/or substitute for anticipated tuition aid increases?

The bill provides $39.5 billion for K thru 16 public schools and universities for “backfilling” of state budget cuts. It can be used to replace state funds that were unrealized during the current year, and for FY 10 and FY 11. At this time I don’t know the exact breakdown between K-12 and Higher Education, but I anticipate we will realize some assistance to help hold the line on tuition and related expenses.

5. Does the stimulus bill contain funds for renovation, modernization, new construction and educational research projects?

Facilities modernization is included in the $39.5 billion mentioned earlier. An additional $6 billion is included for energy efficiency upgrades. We have a number of building renovation and modernization projects in Stephenville and Granbury that could be positively impacted. We’ll have to wait and see if we benefit.

At the present time we have two major construction projects that would qualify for support.
Both are designed for maximum efficiency to insure minimal environmental impact. Both projects are “spade ready.” Construction of a new $24.3 million Nursing Building and an $11.1 million state-of-the-art Regional Dairy Research Center is scheduled to begin soon. (Groundbreaking for the dairy is scheduled for Feb. 27.)

The bill also provides $8.8 billion to award for “high priority” needs, which include education. We are hopeful to receive funds to address a number of “high priority” projects such as our outreach programs in Fort Worth, Waco, Killeen and Abilene.

Finally, the bill includes $180 million for competitive grants for research buildings. We have a long-standing request to create a research center and we hope to benefit, but the competition will be stiff.

THURBER, TEXAS—Many Texans may not realize that the Bonnie and Clyde Suite of the Stockyards Hotel in Fort Worth displays writings by the infamous Bonnie Parker along with one of her pistols or that Teddy Roosevelt recruited some of his Rough Riders at the Menger Hotel bar in San Antonio.

Fortunately for those wanting to add more adventures to their Lone Star vacations, Tarleton State University’s W.K. Gordon Center for the Industrial History of Texas at Thurber is hosting a free program on Sun., Oct. 19, at 2:30 p.m. The program will feature Liz Carmack, author of “Historic Hotels of Texas: A Traveler’s Guide.”

Carmack decided to write her travel guide because none of its kind existed and she enjoyed the refreshing individuality of older hotels and their stories. She traveled more than 17,000 miles to visit the 64 hotels featured in her book.

While at the Von Minden Hotel in Schulenburg, a self-described “medium” helped her pick out a room with the least amount of supernatural activity. At the 14-story deserted Baker Hotel in Mineral Wells, she took a three-hour tour by flashlight.

During the presentation, Carmack will discuss practical tips for planning trips to historic hotels, specifically those in this region. Her travel articles have appeared in “Texas Highways,” “Austin Woman”, and “Heritage” magazines. A book signing will follow the presentation and copies of the guide will be available for purchase in the museum’s gift shop.

The Gordon Center is a museum and research facility located about halfway between Fort Worth and Abilene at exit 367 on Interstate 20. The museum is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and closed on Monday. For more information, call (254) 968-1886.

GRANBURY, TEXAS—Tarleton State University’s Dora Lee Langdon Cultural and Educational Center is hosting the eighth annual Jazz on the Green at 2 p.m. on Sun., Oct. 26. The concert will be held at the Langdon Center, located just off Granbury Square.

The audience will be treated to live music of swing, Dixieland, funk, big band and progressive jazz.

The featured group will be Tarleton’s Jazz Ensemble I under the direction of Greg Ball. Joining them will be the-up-and-coming Langdon Center Big Band and Pearl Street Dixieland Band, both under the direction of Mark Hettle.

“This tradition started as a means of livening up the many fall activities in Granbury with great music,” said Janice Horak, director of the Langdon Center. “Greg Ball and his ensembles has been the mainstay of this annual event. The Langdon Center Big Band with so many great, area musicians brings something new each year. It’s a terrific, outdoor event for the autumn.”

The award-winning Jazz Ensemble is a standard “big band” of 20 musicians and tours extensively. The Jazz Ensemble is highly competitive and membership is by audition only.

Ball is a graduate of Youngstown State University and the University of North Texas. He gives credit to his dad, Richard, for introducing him to jazz at an early age. Richard Ball still plays the vibes at regular gigs in Ohio, while his son leads university jazz ensembles and his own Greg Ball Trio.

“We will be doing some American standards like ‘All of Me’, ‘When Sunny Get’s Blue’, ‘I Only Have Eyes for You’as well as some new things, ‘Funky Cha Cha’ [Latin tune], ‘Hay Burner’ [Basie tune] and ‘Oblivion’ [Piazzolla tune].”

The Langdon Center Big Band is a 22-piece community music organization started in 2007. As its director, Hettle brings more than 30 years of performing, teaching and conducting to the group.

In the Big Band portion of the concert, attendees will hear familiar tunes such as “Strike Up the Band”, “Come Fly with Me” and “Sophisticated Lady.”

The newest group, Pearl Street Dixieland Band, will start off the concert with authentic Dixieland music of the early 1900s with traditional acoustic instrumentation.

Jazz on the Green celebrates great jazz and creative improvised music. The event also coincides with the Harvest Moon Festival on the historical Granbury Square and the Rio Brazos Art Exhibition in Tarleton’s Langdon Center Concert Hall. The audience is encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and refreshments.

At a noon news conference, Halstead said his department had finished its investigation and that Officer Stephanie A. Phillips, who shot the victim with the Taser, would remain on active duty assigned to patrol, as she has since the incident.

“If the grand jury returns an indictment and she is convicted, she will be terminated,” Halstead said.

He added that he expected the grand jury to receive the case the first week in November.

The chief also said that he voluntarily provided a copy of the investigation report to the FBI and the U.S. Justice Department for review.

“I have the utmost confidence in our investigative process. I understand the community’s concerns and have taken them very seriously,” Halstead said. “I want to reassure our citizens and city leaders that the Fort Worth Police Department is committed to providing service with respect in an open and transparent manner and that is precisely the reason I provided the FBI with our investigation.”

Michael Patrick Jacobs Jr., 24, died April 18 after being shot twice with the Taser by Phillips.

Jacobs’ parents had called police because their son was causing problems. He became combative, police have said, and he was shocked for 49 seconds the first time, the second time for five seconds, after a one-second interval. He died later at John Peter Smith Hospital.

Tarrant County Medical Examiner Nizam Peerwani ruled the death a homicide. In his report, Phillips told a detective after the incident that she “unknowingly kept the Taser trigger engaged for an unknown amount of time when she first applied the Taser, thus increasing the pre-programmed shock duration cycle of five seconds.”

When Jacobs “continued to struggle,” Phillips warned him again that if he did not “cease fighting and comply with officers’ requests, she would shock him again, according to the report. When [Jacobs] failed to cooperate, Phillips shocked him a second time.”

The Jacobs family has filed a wrongful death suit against the city of Fort Worth and the police department.

Since the Fort Worth Police Department began using Tasers in 2001, police employees have used Tasers 1,360 times, according to information released by the department in August. Of those, police said, there have been four in-custody deaths, including Jacobs’. Three of the people who died were high on cocaine, according to autopsy reports.

STEPHENVILLE, TX–Four of Texas’ most distinguished journalists–John Tackett, Roland Lindsey, James Norman and the late Jerry Flemmons–will be among former Tarleton State University journalism students honored at Oct. 17-18 homecoming festivities.

All four would enjoy award-winning careers as big-city newspapermen, chronicling such events as the John F. Kennedy assassination. All four started as staff members of the GRASSBURR yearbook and/or The J-TAC student newspaper at Tarleton in the 1950s.

Dr. Stuart Chilton, GRASSBURR and J-TAC faculty adviser from 1954-57, was handed the task of gathering the journalism alumni from near and far.

“When we began in November 2007, we only had six addresses of the 102 staff addresses,” Chilton said. ”I cannot take all the credit in finding these former students. It has been a concerted effort from these former staffers and the Alumni Relations Office.”

A large crowd of alumni and family members is anticipated.

“I initially thought we might have 60 persons (staffers, spouses, children, grandchildren) in attendance” Chilton said. “Now, it appears this number might approach 100.”

Flemmons, a Stephenville High School graduate who died in 1999, is arguably the most famous of the quartet.

He made his mark at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram covering the JFK assassination and subsequent Dallas trial of Jack Ruby, who shot presumed Kennedy assassin Lee Harvey Oswald. Flemmons was a pallbearer the day Oswald was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Fort Worth.

Flemmons was the heralded travel editor at the Star-Telegram for a number of years and turned out a best-selling biography of former Star-Telegram publisher Amon Carter Sr.

During his last year on the J-TAC staff, Flemmons wrote a front page column titled “Plowlines.” Those who didn’t read his column at Tarleton may remember him instead as the Tarleton Plowboys’ standout quarterback in the mid-50s.

Flemmons graduated from East Texas State University in 1960 and worked at the Abilene Reporter-News before going to the Star-Telegram. Appropriately, he returned to the Tarleton fold serving as the institution’s first writer-in-residence, a position he held for four years before his death.

“I had the privilege of getting to know Jerry when he was appointed writer-in-residence and occupied an apartment at Tarleton’s Langdon Center in Granbury,” said Dr. Koy Floyd, Tarleton’s Vice President for Institutional Advancement. “Jerry was a true curmudgeon and loved the written word. “He was a regular contributor to Southern Living and other national publications and served as a popular guest speaker for the university community and the Cross Timbers Region.”

Tackett, a Stephenville High School graduate and Plano resident, earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1961. He worked for a number of daily newspapers in Texas such as the Fort Worth Press, Star-Telegram, Houston Press, Stephenville Empire-Tribune, San Antonio Light and San Antonio Express-News.

During his Star-Telegram stint, Tackett won the Stanley Walker Award for Excellence in Journalism for a story about juveniles being forced to live in adult jails.

Tackett was also co-anchor, with Jim Lehrer, of Dallas-Fort Worth Channel 13’s Newsroom program. Tackett wrote primarily sports stories for the J-TAC. Like Flemmons, he wrote extensively in later years about the JFK assassination.

Lindsey, a native of San Saba and Georgetown resident, worked on the J-TAC from 1957-59 and went on to Texas Tech, where he received his bachelor’s degree.

Lindsey was for 18 years the well-respected state editor at the Star-Telegram before retiring in March of 2000. Lindsey, like Flemmons, was part of the Star-Telegram’s old guard of Texas writers, reporters and editors.

Prior to joining The Fort Worth Star-Telegram staff in 1982, Lindsey worked on The Brownwood Bulletin, The Del Rio News-Herald and The Austin American-Statesman. He also worked with the United Press International (UPI) in the Austin Capital Bureau for 17 years — 15 of these years as the Bureau Chief

Before becoming a journalist, Norman made news as a standout football player at Glen Rose High School. At Tarleton, he was a reporter for the J-TAC from 1955-56. After receiving his journalism degree from Sam Houston State University, Norman joined the sports staff of the Abilene Reporter-News.

Later, as a fixture of the Star-Telegram sports department, he was renowned as one of America’s top rodeo writers. He retired from journalism to become a rural mail carrier in Parker County but still does freelance writing for rodeo publications.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Beginning in the spring 2009 semester, Tarleton State University will use electronic billing instead of traditional paper bills. The electronic billing, or “eBills,” will become the official method of notification for student billing.
The Texan Bill Pay, as it is referred to on campus, is advantageous for several reasons.

Texan Bill Pay is expected to work faster and more efficiently than traditional methods of billing, eliminating worries about lost mail. With the Texan Bill Pay, it is easy to pay by any major credit card, electronic check or debit card.
The electronic system will also allow for online payment plans. Instead of paying one lump sum, users will be able to spread the cost of tuition and fees over a term by enrolling in the Texan Payment Plan.

E-mail notification will be used as new eBills arrive. Reminders can also be set up for payment plan due dates.

In addition, the Texan Bill Pay can be accessed securely from anywhere 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Login is secured through the student’s Duck Trax account, where he or she will be able to access prior statements, view account information and make payments online.

If desired, students can authorize their parents, grandparents or others to access their billing information.

Tarleton has chosen to go to the Texan Bill Pay plan to provide the best customer service to its students and their parents or guardians. The vast majority of students and parents are comfortable with the Web environment, and this method will provide them with a more efficient and accurate account of their Tarleton bill.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—The United States currently faces a severe shortage of nurses, but Tarleton State University is actively working to alleviate the deficit. Since the start of Tarleton’s nursing, the department has done its part to produce highly trained, qualified professionals.

In fact, nursing enrollment numbers were higher than any other major on campus in fall 2006. By fall 2007, enrollment had increased by 191 percent since 2002.

But these efforts still may not be enough. Tarleton now has more plans in the works to increase nursing enrollment, while continuing to develop the skills students will need to enter the workforce. One of the first steps includes the completion of a $24.3-million facility to accommodate the growing department.

“The new building will provide the space necessary for the nursing program to expand undergraduate enrollment, develop a graduate program and expand research opportunities,” said Dr. Elaine Evans, Tarleton’s nursing director.

Changes in curriculum call for more computers and advanced technology. Blueprints for the 75,000-square foot, three-story structure include classrooms, multimedia rooms, project rooms and a health center. It will also house a state-of-the-art simulation-learning center using realistic nursing equipment to prepare students for a real healthcare environment, which will be a huge improvement from Tarleton’s current nursing building that was constructed in 1953 and served previously as an infirmary and health center.

But along with the improved space, comes the need for a new plan.

“We need to prepare more nurses,” Evans said. “Texas nursing programs must graduate 25,000 new professional nurses per year by 2020 to meet the nursing workforce demands. Tarleton had 60 nursing graduates in 2008. We need to graduate a minimum of 120 per year by 2013. We will be able to double program enrollment from 200 to 400 students when the new nursing building is available, if we have adequate faculty positions.”

Dr. Evans went on to list a few of the program’s priorities.

“We also need to continue to develop student and faculty research initiatives,” Evans said. “We need to initiate a graduate program (master of science in nursing) by the fall of 2011 to prepare nurses for management positions in healthcare agencies and nurses prepared for nursing program faculty positions.

“Next, we should showcase the reputation we have garnered from the satisfaction of employers of our graduates to the wider community—become the destination school for high-ability nursing students and faculty. We need to develop a strong alumni organization and friends of nursing network, and we need to continue to offer continuing education programs for area nurses.”

The department’s innovative new facility and strong priorities set it apart from other nursing schools. The program also focuses on rural healthcare, a challenging issue that has arisen within the field of medicine.

Paula Faulk Maness, an assistant professor in Tarleton’s nursing department, gave a definition of rural nursing.

“Rural nursing at its core is no different than all nursing,” Maness said. “You have to value both the art and science of nursing. Rural nursing is caring for the patient from the cradle to the grave. It is possible for a nurse to care for multiple generations within the same family. It is one of the most accountable forms of nursing. There is no anonymity. You know everyone and everyone knows you. Your patients are your community; they are the people you see at church, in the grocery store, at ball games, at the bank, the filling stations and restaurants.”

According to Evans, Tarleton’s nursing program has a long history of preparing students for such challenges and opportunities.

“The program is distinctive because we have a 32-year history of using rural and community hospitals and other rural healthcare agencies to prepare graduates to professionally and competently care for patients,” Evans said. “Tarleton nursing students have the unique opportunity to manage the care of multiple patients, work several three consecutive 12-hour shits, and practice clinical reasoning skills prior to graduation. Although our graduates are prepared to work in both urban and rural settings, our program has a special emphasis on rural nursing and healthcare because most of our students and faculty live and work in rural areas.”

Tarleton’s program, like the field itself, is constantly evolving.

“Young people are interested in entering nursing,” Evans said. “Our nursing program population reflects ages of the general college population. Approximately nine percent of our student body is men. We hope this percentage will increase in the future.”

Evans says that the nursing program has responded to the needs and expectations of the surrounding communities and hospitals are taking note.

“Our students must be able to care for a minimum of five patients in Senior I nursing courses,” Evans said. “In their final semester, students have the opportunity to function as a professional nurse while under the watchful eye of a nurse preceptor and faculty members. Healthcare agencies comment on how well our graduates are prepared for their first jobs.”

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Spencer Henry, an international consultant on motivating and managing people, returned to Tarleton State University on Sept. 23 as part of the Jim Boyd Effective Schools Project (ESP) and its development series.

The leadership development conferences feature speakers most school districts would not be able to afford on their own. Featured speakers focus on the latest education techniques, practices or strategies designed to increase classroom learning and improve educators within their classrooms.

Henry was the first of four speakers who will visit Tarleton’s campus this year. He was selected again because of the overwhelming success from his first visit with ESP.

Henry addressed an audience of almost 400, including 182 public school teachers and principals representing more than 60 schools. Tarleton personnel participating in the conference included 24 faculty members, 22 school administration interns, 99 teaching interns and 47 students preparing to student teach.

Henry has more than 40 years experience in education and has taught from the elementary to high school levels and also college courses.

His presentation focused on practical strategies for developing a positive school culture founded on mutual respect and focused on learning. The response to the presentation was overwhelmingly positive, with almost all participants indicating what they learned was relevant to their campus goals and would help improve their professional practices.

According to one teacher, “I attended last year, and I’ve applied much of what I’ve learned. I am seeing a lot of difference in my students’ behavior and manners. Awesome. Every teacher should come to hear him.”

Upcoming speakers for ESP include the following:
• LeAnn Nickelsen – Nov. 19 – “Deeper Learning for ALL Students.”
• Eric Jensen – Jan. 23, 2009 – “Seven Discoveries from Brain Research that Could Revolutionize Education.”
• John Perricone – Feb. 19, 2009 – “Why Am I A Teacher?”

ESP is a collaborative professional development program involving Tarleton and public schools within its service area. Since it began more than 20 years ago, ESP has become one of the nation’s longest-running school-improvement programs. It is also one of the most unique educational partnerships in Texas, and possibly the United States. 



“Tarleton works hand in hand with 60 to 70 public schools participating each year in ESP,” said Dr. Bill Larmer, professor in Tarleton’s College of Education. “By combining our resources and efforts, we are able to provide professional development conferences throughout the year.”



In addition to the local service area, school districts participating in ESP come from Albany, Alvaredo, Graham, Killeen, Southlake, Burleson, Lake Worth, Cisco and many more.

My personal opinion: Well, I’ve called Parham’s about 8 times in the last two months, for various things. I still call them because it seems like EVERYBODY uses Parhams. And I don’t know what the problem is but I can’t get them to move anything for me.

My first experience was with a portable building, I should have learned from it the first time. I was told the only person in town who could move it would be Jerry Parham. So I called… and the desk lady told me he wasn’t in and to call back in an hour. So I did… and was told the same thing. So when I called them back, and told them they asked me to call back in an hour, they told me that… Jerry isn’t here can I have him call you back? So I tried to be polite as I told her that I’d been told that several times previously. So then I get put on the phone with a guy who just tells me that Jerry is going to have to talk to me about it.

So being tired of being given the run around I went to Parham’s and asked for Jerry. I was told he was in the yard. Okay, awesome so now I have to find him. So I walked up to where he was on a Bobcat doing some work and told him the situation. He said he was going to have to do some measurements, and told me what to get. I went and got the measurements for him, and he never called me back again. Fed up, we let the building go back to the building company.

Strike one for Parham’s. I’m out a few hundred more because I was given the run around and no answers. Not happy with my experience at all. Especially since I even rented a pole saw and trimmed my trees in preparation. Now there is no building and huge limbs piled up in my yard that are SLOWLY being taken out because of the quantity required to be cut to get the building in there, which of course never arrived. Do I need to come go get the prices for the building out of the file too? I never even recieved an estimate from him. I was just told he’d have to look at it. Apparently, that was on the same to-do list as the call back.

Of course me being a pretty forgiving customer in most situations figured they just didn’t want to move a huge building like that and so Jerry blew me off because he didn’t want to deal with it. Fair enough I’m a busy man too, I can get over that. After all I have a much easier order this time, surely it’s no problem. I just need 3 cars moved from the same place. I don’t want 2 of them, and…. oh okay I’ll have to talk to Jerry. So when Jerry gets on the phone I continue telling how I only need one moved to my house and was wondering if he wanted the other two. He told me they weren’t worth buying for parts so all he could do at the distance was take them off my hands. That’s fine with me of course, just take them, how much to move my other car? Well where are you moving it to? So I tell them my address, and was informed that someone was trying to get them towed earlier that week, so I explained that it was a family situation and I needed to move my vehicles because my mother is harassing me over them and slandering my name around town and it would just be best if I removed them from my grandparents property and just pull the fuel from the fire so to speak. So Jerry told me to call back after dinner, so I made sure he meant lunch. Since I hadn’t gotten any sleep all night long and had to work at 5 PM I wasn’t happy about it, but how should they know I spent all night working on things?

When my alarm went off at 1pm I called so I could get the ball in motion, and was told that Jerry wasn’t there and to call back in an hour, and I seriously had to resist the urge to smack myself in the forehead. So I stay awake, so I wake up to talk to Jerry I got 4 hours sleep that’s a nice night of rest right? Not happy at this point at all, again. It’s a car, one car moved to my residence, I was already told he’d take the other two off my hands, now I’m just waiting on a freaking price for my 3rd car. WTF? This is getting a bit rediculous, because now, all I’m concerned with is my car coming to my house. I’ve been waiting for 5 and a half hours for an answer. And I keep getting told that Jerry will call me back. Jerry doesn’t call ME back.

So my girlfriend calls them because I can’t seem to get anything done and they’ve been using Parham’s Wrecking for years. So she get’s put on with a driver…. I’m getting excited now, it’s getting done… “Here talk to him about that.” So I pick up the phone, and the guy on the other end of the phone ask me where the pickup and dropoff point is, so I told him and explained that Jerry said he’d take the other two but he wouldn’t give me any money for them, so he tells me I’m going to need to talk to Jerry. So, I really want to cry in exasperation. So I plead to him that I’ve talked to them like 8 times, and I always get told Jerry is going to call me back, or to call Jerry back, and it never happens. Could he please make sure someone calls me back? “Well I can’t make him call you back.”

OBVIOUSLY. Strike 2: I’m ready to call Lightnin’s wrecking service as he has always been fast and informally professional, in fact last time I called him he arrived in 5 minutes, and helped me fix my car instead of towing it. But I see something happening like them both arriving at the same time going why are you here? And me owing even more money for both trips. So now I don’t even know what’s going on and can’t take care of business myself. Not happy. This makes me look unprofessional which always makes me irate when it’s out of my control.

So, I decided to give you guys my own PERSONAL experience with Parham’s Wrecker Service. On the other hand they did my room mate right, had his car towed three days before. Didn’t get the runaround, they dropped it off in our driveway for $50, I just don’t understand why I can’t get a car moved? And if I can’t and they don’t want to do it, why they won’t just tell me that so I can move on and get it done.

So after writing this section of the article up I decided to give them a call again, and this time I told them that I needed to know something so I could get another wrecking service on it if they weren’t willing to do it. They FINALLY told me they had wreckers out of town as in Ft. Worth out of town and that they would be getting the job done tonight.

I left the money with my girlfriend and went to work and made sure to take my phone with me. No phone calls, and no cars. And everyone is working tomorrow. I guess tomorrow is another day.

Tarleton State University-Central Texas will provide a “one stop shop” at two local community colleges for new students who wish to apply for admission and enroll in Tarleton’s Spring 2009 classes.

Tarleton-Central Texas admissions staff will be on-site at Central Texas College and Temple College for two days each to assist students with degree plan advising, applying for admission, registering for classes and applying for scholarships and financial aid, all in one visit. The University will waive the $30 admission application fee for any student who is accepted for admission and registers for Spring 2009 courses at these two events.

Students may take advantage of this offer at Central Texas College on November 12 from 2:00-7:30 p.m. or November 13 from 10:00-4:00 p.m. in building 106, room 201-A (upstairs in the Student Center). At Temple College, students can stop by on November 19 from 2:00-7:30 p.m. or November 20 from 10:00-4:00 p.m. It will be held on the second floor of the Adult Education Testing Room, located in Temple College’s One College Centre. RSVPs are not necessary.

Those interested should bring transcripts (either unofficial or official) from all previously attended institutions. Military personnel should bring completed waiver forms for residency and TSI, available at www.Tarleton.edu/CentralTexas. Students must have 30 transferable credit hours to transfer in to Tarleton-Central Texas. STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS— Tarleton State University’s Equine Assisted Therapy (TREAT) will participate in the Month of the Military Child Festival on April 4 at Ft. Hood, Texas.
The program is from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and TREAT will provide horseback riding for about 4,000 children of military families. Kids of all ages will enjoy the free celebration with competitions, pony rides, a petting zoo and more.

“The happiness that shows on these kids faces is a very rewarding experience,” said TREAT director David Snyder.

Volunteers will leave from the Tarleton Equine Center at 7 a.m. with the animals and equipment and return around 7 p.m. Transportation will be provided between Stephenville and Ft. Hood, if needed.
TREAT is a therapeutic riding program that uses horseback riding as a form of physical, psychological and recreational therapy. The program also provides training for students studying animal sciences, nursing, physical education and special education.

Volunteers are still needed to assist with this event. It is a great opportunity for service and field experience hours and to give back to the community. Student organizations are welcome and encouraged to help assist the children and can use it towards community service hours.

“I have never seen students work so hard for such a long day, end up completely exhausted but eager to do it all over again as soon as possible,” Snyder said.

Everyone must bring a picture identification to have access into the military base. T-shirts, water and food will be provided for volunteers.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University’s Equine Assisted Therapy (TREAT) is hosting its bi-annual rodeo for children with special needs on Tues., Oct. 28, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The rodeo will be held at the Tarleton Equine Center, located on College Farm Road off of Lingleville Highway in Stephenville.

Rodeo participants will compete in events such as pole bending, stick horse barrel racing, dummy roping and a farm animal petting zoo.

Participants in the last TREAT rodeo held on April 15 came from many area schools including Weatherford, Mineral Wells, Dublin, Comanche, Stephenville, Hamilton, Hico, Granbury, Glen Rose and the Happy Hills Farm in Glen Rose.

TREAT is a therapeutic riding program that allows people with special needs to challenge themselves both physically and emotionally. The program also provides training for Tarleton students studying animal sciences, nursing, physical education and special education.

“The changes we see in some participants are phenomenal, ranging from improvements in mobility to improvement in social interactions at home and at school,” said TREAT Director David Snyder. “The changes brought about in the college students who work with TREAT participants are equally impressive.”

When Snyder came to Tarleton in 1993, the university didn’t offer any equine-assisted activities. Now, of the 43 therapeutic riding programs in Texas, TREAT is one of the 16 considered by the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association to be a Premier Accredited Center.

“TREAT’s Special Kids Rodeos provide the opportunity for many more kids and college students to experience the benefits of therapeutic riding,” Snyder said.

Beginning in January, Taylor-area residents will have access to convenient and affordable University courses when Tarleton State University-Central Texas begins offering classes at the Temple College Taylor Center.

The Killeen-based University will offer 12 courses at the Taylor Center, starting with the Spring 2009 semester, which begins January 12. The courses offered are in the areas of criminal justice, business, marketing, management, and psychology.

The courses are offered during a 16-week term, which is January 12-May 6, and two 8-week terms, January 12-March 7 and March 10-May 9, 2009. STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—The Tarleton State University College of Graduate Studies and University Testing is offering a “Preparing to take the GRE” workshop on Feb. 21 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Hickman Building at the university’s Fort Worth Campus off Camp Bowie.

The cost is $10 for current Tarleton students attending the Stephenville, Waco or Southwest Metroplex campuses. For others interested in the workshop, the cost is $20.

Activities will include sessions on GRE test preparation resources, quantitative reasoning, analytical writing and verbal reasoning. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University will celebrate the success of 10 former students during the annual Alumni Academic Forum on March 30. STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University’s meats laboratory offers a wide variety of meats, perfect for the upcoming holiday season. Everyone in the community may purchase items from the meats lab.

The meats lab is located on the College Farm Road in Stephenville and open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

With the holiday season arriving, this is a perfect opportunity to find great holiday ham or other meats at a great price and support Tarleton. Other meats offered include beef, pork, roast, sausage and lamb. Meats can be cut to your preference by contacting the lab.

The meat judging team is also hosting a holiday turkey and ham sale. Smoked turkeys weighing about 10 pounds are $35. Twelve-pound, spiral-sliced hams are $40.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Dr. T. Lindsay Baker, director of Tarleton State University’s W.K. Gordon Center in Thurber, recently delivered the keynote address for the regional conference of a national organization for agricultural museums on Feb. 27. The conference took place in Farmers Branch, Texas, for the Mountain Plains meeting of the Association for Living History, Farm and Agricultural Museums.

Dr. Debra Ann Reid of Eastern Illinois University joined Baker in speaking on “Why This College Professor Loves Living History.” In the presentation, Baker discussed his experiences over the years in first-person “living history” interpretation for the public at museums, parks and historic sites.

Part of the talk dealt with Baker’s experiences at West Texas A&M University, where as a staff member of the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum he lived in a recreated sod house/half dugout on the university’s teaching ranch. He resided there for a year and a half—through two winters in the Texas Panhandle—hauling in water by hand and heating with only wood and cow chips as fuel.

“It was the best way I had to understand better what life was like for sodbusters on the agricultural frontier a century ago,” he said.

The Gordon Center is located about halfway between Fort Worth and Abilene at exit 367 on Interstate 20. The Gordon Center is a museum and research facility devoted to the Texas industrial past.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—A New York soprano will be the featured guest artist with the Tarleton State University Wind Ensemble’s fifth concert of the year.

Diana Solomon-Glover, a classically-trained lyric soprano steeped in the African-American musical tradition, will perform a selection of spirituals and several arias from Georges Bizet’s opera “Carmen” during the concert at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6, in the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center. A “Meet the Artists” reception will follow the performance.

The Wind Ensemble is conducted by Dr. Reginald M. Houze, interim assistant professor and director of bands.

The program for the evening also includes John Philip Sousa’s “Grand Promenade at The White House” and “Easter Monday on The White House Lawn” and Percy Grainger’s “Irish Tune from County Derry” and “Shepherd’s Hey.”

Tarleton-Central Texas to hold nursing information session

KILLEEN-Tarleton State University-Central Texas will hold a nursing information session February 4, 2009, about its Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. The University offers the Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) to BSN and the Registered Nurse (RN) to BSN programs.

The session will be held at 4:00 pm in room 104 at Tarleton-Central Texas’ Southwest building.

Carolyn Prosise, Assistant Professor of Nursing and program coordinator, will provide comprehensive information on how to apply for the programs and to Tarleton-Central Texas, what courses and prerequisites need to be taken, as well as other pertinent information. Hunter Joseph Layland

A friend said it was as if the sky was crying for the troubled teen, a Cleburne High School freshman who committed suicide last week.

Hunter Layland, 15, shot himself before school Wednesday, at about 6:35 a.m. He was at home. Friends and family members say he endured constant bullying, contributing to his death.

About 350 people attended his funeral, where a photograph and football uniform were positioned next to his casket.

“I knew that people picked on him, but I never knew that it was this bad,” said Hailey Dunaway, 14. “I don’t think he knew this many people cared about him.”

Since his death, Mary Layland, the aunt who raised him, said she has learned that students picked on Hunter because he had a scar above his right eye.

Hunter was involved in a car wreck when he was a toddler, leaving him with the scar and hearing difficulties, Layland said. Even after multiple surgeries, the scar was still visible.

Those attending the funeral at the Seventh Day Adventist Church said Hunter didn’t deserve the senseless teasing just because of a scar.

“We all have scars we hide,” said Darerick Morris, a 15-year-old student and Hunter’s friend. “Hunter wasn’t afraid to show his in public. He just wanted to make other people happy.”

Bullying has emerged in recent years as a major problem in schools; it’s estimated that more than 5.7 million youths in the United States are bullied or act as bullies, according to the National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center.

Youths who are bullied are typically anxious, insecure and suffer from low self-esteem, and they rarely defend themselves when confronted, the center’s Web site said. The long-term implications of bullying include depression, social isolation, a loss of concentration in school and an avoidance of classes.

Mary Layland said she knew there was something bothering Hunter, but he never mentioned to her that he was being teased.

Hunter had recently skipped football practice, something that he loved, and told a friend that he wouldn’t be at school Wednesday, Layland said. She heard that one student told Hunter that if his face was that ugly, he would shoot himself.

“I knew something was not right,” Mary Layland said. Hunter “had been acting strange for the past two weeks. He was a good kid, and he didn’t cause any trouble. People in town are pretty upset about the way he was treated.”

Many of the students said that Hunter was nice to the people who made fun of him. His friends said they wished that Hunter would have reached out to them for the same type of help it seemed he was always willing to give.

Students hope that some good will come from Hunter’s death, that bullies will understand the seriousness of their relentless taunting.

Kathryn Hays, 15, said one girl told her that she will never again make fun of anyone, but she added that it is difficult to change human behavior.

“I think it will stop for a little while, but people will forget,” Hays said. “Unfortunately, something like this will probably happen again.”

Preventing suicide
The best way to prevent suicide is through education and learning to recognize and respond to cries for help from those contemplating suicide. For help, call the Suicide and Crisis Center of North Texas hotline at 866-672-5100.

Possible signs Verbal cues: Direct messages include statements such as “I am going to commit suicide,” or “I don’t want to live any more.” Indirect messages include statements such as “I want to go to sleep and never wake up,” and “Do you think suicide is wrong?”

Behavioral cues: Each of the following behaviors by itself may not signal suicidal thinking or depression, but if several are present, there could be cause for concern.

Depression, moodiness, sadness, or lack of energy

Talking directly or indirectly about dying or committing suicide

Changes in sleeping or eating habits

Discouragement about the future, self-criticism

Recent lack of concern about physical appearance, hygiene

Withdrawal from social contacts or communication difficulty

THURBER, TEXAS—Andy Wilkinson and special guest Andy Hedges will perform in a free concert featuring cowboy music at Tarleton State University’s W.K. Gordon Center in Thurber on Dec. 13. The evening will begin with refreshments at 6:30 p.m.

Wilkinson is a poet, song writer, singer, playwright and Thurber descendant, who has recorded seven albums and written five plays. He often draws inspiration from Texas historical sources. His work has received several awards, including the Texas Historical Foundation’s John Ben Shepperd Jr. Craftsmanship Award and three National Western Heritage “Wrangler” awards. He is the artist in residence at the Southwest Collection at Texas Tech University, where he is also a visiting assistant professor in music. In addition to writing and teaching, Wilkinson performs extensively throughout the United States and abroad.

Hailing from Lubbock, Texas, Hedges is a singer and guitarist who has entertained audiences throughout the West. He is known for his classic cowboy recitations and folk music, which feature cowboy, Scottish and bluegrass influences. Hedges has performed at national and statewide cowboy poetry gatherings. Hedges released two albums of cowboy poetry and debuted his first music album in 2004.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—The talent of Tarleton State University art students is now on display in the gallery of the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center.

The annual Spring 2009 Student Art Show features art students who are enrolled in Design I, Drawing II, Introduction to Digital Graphic, Painting Studio and Sculpture Studio.

The show includes artwork produced in a variety of media including painting, pens, ceramic sculpture, charcoal and pencils. The exhibition not only reflects the imagination and skill of art students, but also the diversity of Tarleton’s art program.

The show runs through April 27. The gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. It is free and open to the public. A reception honoring the artists will be from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 2, at the gallery.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—In the last seven months, Dr. Joe Christopher, professor emeritus in English at Tarleton State University, has published three essays and two creative works.

Christopher’s article “The Christian Parody in Sara Paretsky’s Ghost Country” appeared in the spring issue of “Mythalore.” Although Paretsky is mainly known for her mystery novels, “Ghost Country” is one of two non-mysteries and describes homeless women on the streets of Chicago.

His essay “Detective Fiction” was published in the ninth volume of “The New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture,” which was edited by Thomas Inge. This essay surveys the best and most recognized mystery fiction set in the original Confederate States, with emphasis reflecting the society’s culture.

Christopher’s essay titled “Ellery Queen” appeared in Vol. 1 of the “Student’s Encyclopedia of American Literary Characters,” edited by Matthew Bruccoli and Judith Baughman. This fictional mystery about Ellery Queen, a detective, appeared from 1929 to 1971. It was written by two cousins using the pseudonym of Ellery Queen. Christopher’s essay discusses the detective’s character.

Christopher’s creative works were published in the 30th issue of “The Mythic Circle.” The first was “The Kerynaean Hind,” which retells in a series of poems Hercules’ capture of a supernatural deer and is based on Greek myth.

His second creative work was “Shpuch and Shtaj.” This is an adaptation of a Mayan myth from the “Popol Vuh.” Christopher’s work tells the story using a mixture of prose and verse. He was also able to read “Shpuch and Shtaj” at the Langdon Weekend, held in Granbury in September.

GRANBURY, TEXAS—The Dora Lee Langdon Cultural and Education Center in Granbury will feature the artwork of a recent graduate from Tarleton State University.

Melody Kennedy’s work will be on display April 4 through April 25 in the historical A.P. Gordon House. Visitors can see the artwork from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturdays.

Kennedy, a Haskell native, began experimenting with art in her last year of high school, where her creativity and passion for individuality was fueled. After high school, Kennedy continued her love of art at Tarleton and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in art with all-level teaching certification in fall 2008.

“The department of fine arts at Tarleton gave me the opportunity to experiment with various techniques in several media including watercolor, acrylic and printmaking, as well as broaden my horizons by entertaining my interests in art history,” she said. “In art, serenity and simplicity are my primary goals, and as an artist I strive to find myself through my work.”

Kennedy’s artwork often includes interpretations of places she has visited or people with whom she has made a connection. In 2007, she traveled to Italy to research the impact Italians had on art and history. While in Italy, she viewed masterpieces such as the Sistine Chapel and Michelangelo’s “David.” This inspired her to construct a series of pieces, which were influenced by the architecture and culture of Italy.

“As a person in search of self, I look for meaning from people and places I come across and see art as the means for expression,” she said. “My work usually begins with an image, either in my head or from a photograph I’ve taken, then evolves into generally light, airy depictions of space and time.”

Kennedy’s work has been displayed in student art exhibits in the gallery of the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center and in juried shows. She is a member of national honor societies, Phi Eta Sigma, Kappa Delta Pi and Alpha Chi.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University received a $150,000 grant from the Greater Texas Foundation to establish an endowed scholarship that will provide incentives for high-potential science and math students.

The grant stems from a proposal submitted by Dr. James Pierce, dean of the College of Science and Technology, and Dr. Jill Burk, dean of the College of Education, requesting the funding to establish and maintain a Freshman Immersion in Teaching (FIT) program to identify, recruit and provide scholarships for math and science majors seeking to become public school teachers.

The FIT program will provide knowledge, experience and financial support to encourage students to become science or math teachers and to keep them on the path toward certification.

“There is a critical need for math and science teachers in Texas,” Burk said. “In 10 years, with the help of the FIT Endowment, Tarleton will introduce 120 science and math students to teaching.”

Adding insult to injury, Judge Wenell justified his decision — witnessed by a packed courtroom of dog lovers and owners, many of whom wept — by stating, “We must remember the victim herein was not a person,” and “[Sire] was not some valuable fancy show dog belonging to another. It was not a neighbor boy’s dog, it was not an elderly person’s companion…We do not have a statewide problem with this kind of crime.”

Wow. Just try telling any veterinarian that one’s own Border Collie beaten 30 times in the head felt less pain than neighbor boy Johnny Smith’s Border Collie, whom he also beat. Just try telling police that just because your mixed-breed terrier is bleeding from the mouth and ears and nose after you punched and kicked him that it’s really no big deal, because, after all, “Gee, it’s not like I did this to ol’ elderly Ethel Simpson’s companion dog down the road.”

Worse, just try looking into the eyes of a 50-pound bleeding and dying American Bulldog pup who wanted nothing more than to serve and love you but really just couldn’t help himself from piddling on the floor after you fed him bowl after bowl of beer, and just try telling him how his short life and the pain you inflicted on him didn’t matter because, after all, it wasn’t like he was a fancy show dog or anything. It wasn’t like he belonged to someone else. It wasn’t like he could suffer or feel pain. It wasn’t like he wasn’t yours to use and abuse as you saw fit. And, if there were any doubts about the rights you had to inflict such heinous and hideous cruelty upon him, just remind him this is Iowa where people can get away with things like that. Tell him too, that if he doesn’t believe you, well…. he could have introduced you to a judge who’d have set you straight had you not died.

Sire

When I wrote my original post here on the blog about Bobby Loggins pounding to death his 5-month-old American Bulldog, “Sire,” for piddling on the floor, I had no foresight of the venom about to spew forth from across the country after Loggins’ sentencing. The judge’s slap-on-the-wrist punishment sparked a chain reaction of outrage and vitriolic comments with regard to Iowa’s double-edged and reprehensible miscarriage of justice.

I also, admittedly, did not know the full extent to which poor Sire was beaten and suffered until the recent court proceedings. And though it pains me even now to include those details absent from my original post, they are precisely why our state and every other state needs to recognize that tolerating such abominable acts is precursory to eroding one’s very morals and soul. When that happens, can the breakdown of families and communities be far behind?

Show and Tell: Value’s Sliding Scale

Not until Judge Gary Wenell’s Feb. 12, 2010, decision of Bobby Loggins’ fate did I really recognize the extent to which lives are graded on a sliding scale. It’s a tough thing to swallow. Like bile. The lesson began last June.

On June 9, 2009, Bobby Loggins, then 35, spent the first part of the day drinking beer, smoking marijuana and fishing with his friend, Chad Peterson. After the two returned to Loggins’ home at 1611 23rd Street in Sioux City and were joined by other friends for a party, Loggins began feeding his 5-month-old American Bulldog, Sire, “bowl after bowl of beer,” according to Peterson.

When Sire began to urinate on the dining room floor, Loggins — who has a history of drug and alcohol abuse — straddled the pup and restrained it with one hand while using the other to repeatedly strike blows to the dog’s head. He then picked Sire up by his ears and tail and took him outside through a back door.

Witnesses said (and later testified) that when Loggins eventually brought the puppy back into the house and placed it on the kitchen floor, that the brown and white pup was bleeding from the mouth and nose, shaking and unable to move.

“To me it looked like the dog was paralyzed,” Peterson stated. “He was shaking. It looked like convulsions. He was coughing up blood.”

Peterson said he knelt down and tried to comfort the puppy while Loggins just stood there, showing no remorse for what he had done. When Peterson confronted Loggins about his [lack of] reaction, Loggins shoved him into a chair and ordered him to leave. Peterson obliged and peddled his bike to the Kum & Go station at 14th and Court streets, where he called police.

Guest Kollin Jones said he’d witnessed Loggins rubbing the dog’s nose into the carpet before pinning it down to inflict additional punches. Jones also said that he, his girlfriend, Alexandra Groves, Loggins and his wife and Peterson had engaged in a conversation about dogs drinking beer, and told police Loggins “took it way too far.”

Loggins’ wife, Rochelle Loggins, didn’t see it that way. Rochelle Loggins said her husband had only given the dog “a few taps on the head” before grabbing it by the collar and escorting it outside. She said her husband told her he had slammed the door into the dog.

Loggins was charged with animal torture, though Iowa’s current animal cruelty/torture laws allowed no more than aggravated misdemeanor charges being filed in his case, which carried a sentence of up to just two years in prison and a $6,000 fine. On June 18, 2009, Loggins pleaded not guilty to inflicting the 30 blows to Sire’s head that caused the puppy’s death.

On Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, Loggins stood trial before Sioux City District Court Judge Gary Wenell for allegedly beating Sire to death. Loggins, who waived his right to a jury trial, also was charged with making a false police report, a simple misdemeanor. Wenell dismissed that charge when Assistant Woodbury County Attorney Mark Campbell said the facts of the case did not fit the charge.

Wenell found Loggins guilty of the animal torture crime on January 25, 2010, with sentencing scheduled for Feb. 12.

As eyes across the nation focused on Iowa that day, it came as no surprise when Loggins’ attorney, John Moeller, and Loggins’ wife pleaded for a shorter sentence than the two-year maximum pushed for by the prosecutor. Rochelle Loggins argued she needed him at home to take care of the kids while she slept so she could work nights.

No one, however, ever imagined the non sequitur the judge would deliver.

Wenell wrote that eyewitness accounts and testimony of the veterinarian clearly indicated that Loggins’ actions caused the puppy’s death. Loggins had restrained the puppy with one hand in order to inflict blows with the other, which Wenell said caused the animal severe physical pain.

Additionally, though no witnesses saw what happened outside, Wenell wrote that circumstantially, the evidence supported that additional blows took place outside, and that Loggins took the dog outside because he knew his actions would be deemed unacceptable.

“Restraint of a more or less helpless creature to administer pain to such a creature connotes depravity and sadism,” he wrote.

Yet after noting all these facts, the judge then stripped 95 percent off the maximum sentence, sentenced Loggins to only 30 days in jail and credited him for time already served.

“[Sire] was not some valuable fancy show dog belonging to another,” he said.

A fancy show dog? Belonging to another?

The sliding scale nosedived. I choked on the intimations: Show me a plumber and I’ll tell you why his life is less important than a bank’s vice president. Show me your next-door neighbor’s 5-month-old daughter and I’ll tell you why her life matters more than your own little girl’s. Show me a champion greyhound on the track and I’ll tell you why his life is valued more than that happy-go-lucky family retriever racing to fetch the frisbee your son threw in your back yard.

Wenell also stated that Iowa didn’t have a statewide problem with animal torture and that there was no evidence that Loggins — whose prior convictions include drug possession and traffic offenses — would commit similar violent acts against people. Loggins will be on probation for 18 months upon his release, and the possible $6,000 fine was shaved down to only $650.

Loggins was to report to the Woodbury County Jail by 6 p.m. on February 17th.

“We have to start as a community to change this, and today we didn’t do very good,” said animal rescuer Terry Mann, who added she was more motivated than ever to continue her fight against abuse. “We’ll be watching,” she said, ”we’ll be watching, and you’ll be seeing us.”

In a landslide of raging injustice across Iowa and beyond, one question remained consistent: How could something like this have happened in our justice system?

For the answer, my friends, look no further than the voter registration card in your wallet or desk drawer, and if you hold it just right, you’ll see the state legislature in its reflection.

Making the Grade

Remember your school report cards? Yeah, me too. We may not always have liked all those grades, but how else were we to know if our efforts added up to usual, customary and reasonable standards? Report cards measure progress. They highlight our strengths, punctuate our weaknesses and enable us to work toward realizing our own individual capabilities.

Report cards don’t end after high school or college. The follow us throughout our lifetimes: in our jobs, in our families and communities, and even all the way to the legislature and beyond. We’re constantly being summed up, evaluated, measured and compared, and assigned a grade. Terry Mann knows this well; people are watching.

Iowa Congressman Steve King

When it comes to Sioux City, Iowa, it’s really no exception to other states and cities. One thing Sioux City has that other cities don’t, however, is Iowa Congressman Steve King.

According to tabs kept on Rep. King by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), one might even say he’s a good friend to the likes of Bobby Loggins, who, fortunately for Loggins, just happens to reside in Steve King’s district. The HSUS, you see, also does report cards. Legislators nationwide are scored according to his or her vote on specific pro- or anti-animal related issues — everything from puppy mills and horse slaughtering to pet abuse and grinding chicks alive and using electrified prods to bring “downer cows” to their feet.

The Humane Society’s Legislative Fund just recently released their Mid-Term Humane Scorecard reporting on legislators either leading the way or blocking pro-animal legislation, and anyone living in western Iowa’s 5th Congressional District won’t even bother to ask how King fared. Of 100 possible points (equivalent to an A), King, not surprisingly, scored not only an “F” (Zero percentage points) but was singled out by a long row of bright red Xs used to denote those who specifically took an “anti-animal” issue with one’s vote. Don’t for a minute think this “F” will cause King to lose a minute’s sleep; he’s repeatedly stated in the past he won’t support bills aimed to prevent animal torture and abuse until Roe v. Wade is overturned. (No, I am not making this up.) And while I truly understand and respect opinions on both sides of the abortion debate, I also recognize that it doesn’t preclude the crime behind beating to death either a 5-month-old puppy or 50-year-old woman and that each issue should be addressed on its own merit. View another of King’s “Score: 0; Grade: F” scorecards based on a number of votes affecting the middle-class.

One might think a legislator would take into consideration the values and opinions in his or her legislative district, yet King places no more value on the HSUS report card than he did with the one at Northwest Missouri State University, where he dabbled in a few courses before becoming a college drop-out. His opinions regarding whether legislators should be educated mirror those pertaining to animal abuse and even human torture; he simply does not care what other people think. As has been noted repeatedly by the press, he actually brags about having said or done something that would render a decent human being embarrassed and ashamed.

To wit, King’s intense hatred and/or disregard for any animal’s welfare made headlines yet again as recently as yesterday. In Iowa’s bitterly cold temperatures, a raccoon seeking refuge from our latest blizzard had begun scratching at King’s rural home in search of shelter. King grabbed “Desert Eagle” (his gun) and went after the raccoon, who fled. King then chased down the cold but trusting animal and shot and killed it. And, once again, instead of feeling remorseful for his actions, King used the opportunity to brag about his “kill” on his Twitter page, going so far as to use the juvenile phrase “Desert Eagle 1, Crazy Raccoon zero.”

Bret Hayworth

Sioux City Journal political reporter Bret Hayworth — one of the most unbiased political journalists I’ve ever had the privilege of knowing and calling a friend — wrote yesterday about the King/raccoon incident on his Politically Speaking blog. I’ve known Bret for a number of years and have long admired his ability to remain impartial while still drawing in readers with his engaging writing style and commitment to certitude vs. slant. But in between the paragraphs of his King’s raccoon conquest post, I saw lurking between the lines a human being troubled by the story about which he wrote.

It’s that kind of character that earlier this month earned Bret the Best Blog by a Newspaper award by the Iowa Newspaper Association annual convention. The blog contest wasn’t simply for political blogs, but for blogs of any subject matter for Iowa newspapers. And, at the risk of offending other newspaper bloggers whom I regularly follow, nobody deserved that award more than Bret.

There are parallels here, you see, between the work Bret does and the work our congressman is supposed to be doing and the death of a 5-month-old American Bulldog named Sire. Perhaps if Rep. King led by Bret Hayworth’s example — that being the providing of fair and equal representation to both sides of those whom one is hired or elected to represent — it’s possible Sire might still be alive today and joyously chasing after a frisbee thrown in the back yard by one of Bobby Loggins’ own children.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University’s wind ensemble will present its first concert of the year on Mon., Oct. 20, at 7:30 p.m in the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center auditorium. The ensemble is comprised of Tarleton’s finest brass, percussion and woodwind players. It is the premiere instrumental concert ensemble of the university.

Billed as “Music that goes bump in the night,” the concert will include several symphonic thrillers including “Bacchanale and Entry of Phryne” from “Faust”; “The Battle of Shiloh”; and, “The Universal Judgment.” Tarleton woodwind professor Greg Ball will be featured in a performance of Allesandra Stardella’s “Aria di chiesa – Pieta Signore” and Tarleton’s associate band director, Richard R. Bahner, will guest conduct the Minuet from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony No. 39 in E-flat. A meet and greet reception will follow the concert.

This concert marks the first performance of the ensemble led by new faculty member Dr. Reginald M. Houze. Previously, Houze served on the faculties at the University of Southern Mississippi and Clemson University.

"The students of the wind ensemble represent the most talented musicians on the Stephenville campus,” Houze said. “This particular program is quite demanding and the ensemble has been working hard, on a rather limited rehearsal schedule. We look forward to the opportunity to perform for Tarleton and the Stephenville community.”

General admission is $5. Free admission is granted to public school band members and directors as well as Tarleton staff, students and faculty with presentation of valid Texan Card.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Approximately 1,600 regional FFA high school students attended the Tarleton State University Invitational Leadership and Development Event. At the event, FFA members were given the opportunity to participate and receive evaluations from Tarleton students.

Current Tarleton students who are future agricultural educators served as event organizers and judges.

“What people have been most excited about is the fact that our students are able to schedule and operate an event like this without relying on faculty,” said Dr. Kyle McGregor, associate professor of agricultural services and development. “This event is completely student led. They start with no budget and no resources. They must reserve rooms, order awards, appoint judges and ensure that the events are conducted smoothly and fairly.”

FFA students compete in various events that include radio, FFA quiz, creed speaking, skills, chapter conducting and agricultural issues. These events allow students to become leaders in their own FFA chapters and give them an opportunity to demonstrate useful skills.

The event also provided Tarleton’s future agricultural teachers with an additional skill set.

“The management and coordination of such an event is something they will do quite a bit of once they become teachers,” McGregor said.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—One of the hippest jazz combos is returning to Tarleton State University to perform for one night only.

The Bertha Coolidge Jazz Group will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 9, in the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center Theater.

The dynamic quartet, which is described as “Texas garage jazz,” plays music that is exciting, humorous, surprising and always fun, according to Greg Ball, assistant professor and assistant director of bands, who specializes in woodwinds and jazz studies at Tarleton.

The group consists of Aden Bubeck on electric and acoustic basses, Rich Stitzel on drums, Paul Metzger on guitar and Joe Carter on vibes and organ.

Carter is a former Tarleton faculty member who taught percussion from 2000-03. He now teaches at Texas Christian University and is a busy freelance player in the Metroplex. Bubeck tours with Grammy winner Miranda Lambert, but is off the road for a short time. Stitzel lives in Chicago and plays around the country. Metzger lives in the Denton area, teaches and plays all over the Metroplex.

This will be the third appearance of the group at Tarleton. They appeared on stage during the 2003 Tarleton Jazz Festival. The band only plays together rarely and is reunited now because Stitzel is in town to play at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. They have been playing gigs in the area and are working on a new CD.

The concert is sponsored by ULTRA Club. Admission is free.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University’s Jazz Ensembles will perform their final concert of the semester at the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center on Thu., Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m. “A Night at the Club” will feature Jazz Ensemble II directed by Dr. Cara Pollard and Jazz Ensemble I directed by Greg Ball.
Prior to the event, a pre-concert coffee and dessert soiree will begin at 7 p.m. and be accompanied by student-led jazz combos. Tickets are $5 or free with a Texan ID card. The public is encouraged to attend. Tickets will go on sale at the door at 6:30 p.m.

“We are trying to create a more casual, laid-back atmosphere for the show,” Ball said. “When people see the jazz bands on the same stage that they saw a formal, tuxedo-clad performance the week before, they feel they should be formal with us. We want people to let their hair down, relax and have as much fun as we’re having on stage.”

Those in attendance can expect more subdued lighting, artwork displays and candlelit tables on stage.

Musically, the bands are working on some great charts. The Jazz Ensemble II’s set includes Chuck Mangione’s popular piece, “The Children of Sanchez.” They will also feature faculty member Heather Hawk singing “Fly Me to the Moon” and “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore.”

Jazz Ensemble I will bring back vocalist Isidro Hulin, who will sing “Woman’s Got Soul.” Other highlights include Arturo Sandoval’s “Funky Cha Cha” and Pat Metheny’s exciting
“First Circle.”

“There will be a little something for everyone—swing, rock, Latin, ballads and more,” Ball said. “We want you dancing in the aisles.”

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University’s international academic programs recently partnered with Stephenville High School (SHS) to facilitate the visit of two South Korean high school English teachers—Jaehong Cho and Soon Deok Kwon. Cho teaches at Mokpo Girls’ High School in Mokpo, and Kwon teaches at Daejeon Saint Mary’s Girls’ High School in Daejeon.

During their stay in Stephenville from Feb. 6-18, Cho and Kwon visited a variety of classes at the high school, as well as made presentations at two community service organizations. Travis Stillwell, SHS principal, was also instrumental in organizing their schedule and coordinating with a number of high school faculty members who welcomed the Korean teachers into their classrooms. Jennifer Muncey, a member of the English faculty at Stephenville High School, served as their mentor teacher.

Dr. Marilyn Robitaille, the international academic program’s director at Tarleton, said that Tarleton’s membership in the Texas International Educational Consortium (TIEC) led to the opportunity to host the two teachers. Cho and Kwon were part of a group of 38 teachers from throughout South Korea who participated in the 8th annual Fulbright American Studies Institute for Secondary School Teachers of English.

After spending a month at the Texas Intensive English Program, a division of the TIEC in Austin, the participants will take part in a two-week site-residency program in secondary schools at various locations throughout the state and will afterward return to Austin for a two-day wrap-up session.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Celebrate Valentine’s Day a little early with the Tarleton State University Jazz Ensembles.

Ensembles 1 and II will present their first concert of the semester, “Love Songs and Blues,” at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5, in the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center Theater.

There will be a pre-show coffee and chocolate soiree complete with live music in the lobby area starting at 7 p.m.

Directors Greg Ball and Dr. Cara Pollard have chosen songs of love and blues to set the mood for Valentine’s Day. Love songs include Stan Kenton’s version of “My Funny Valentine,” “Round Midnight” featuring Eric Camarillo on trombone and Rob McConnell’s exciting version of “Just Friends.” Blues songs include a mambo treatment of Duke Ellington’s “C-Jam Blues,” “Bag’s Grove” with Jordan Jobe on vibes and Maria Schneider’s greasy “Tork’s Café.”

Another highlight of the show will be new works of famous jazz artists by Tarleton theater students. The large-scale portraits were completed as a final project for a scene painting class taught by Carol Stavish, associate professor of theatre. The flats feature the likenesses of Miles Davis, Count Basie, John Coltrane, J.J. Johnson and Art Blakey.

“It is always fun to collaborate with other disciplines in our department,” Ball said. “Carol and I have done several musicals together but she is always very helpful with our stage décor. These paintings are very cool, and I am excited about showing them off at this concert.”

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University’s fall graduation ceremonies will be held Dec. 13 in the Wisdom Gymnasium on the university’s campus.

The first graduation ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. for the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences, College of Science and Technology and the College of Liberal and Fine Arts.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University is hosting a special event for those who love the sound of the strings.

The Carpe Diem String Quartet will return to Tarleton’s Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center Theater to perform at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 26.

Admission to the concert, which will feature Hungarian and Czech chamber music, is $5. Tarleton students, faculty and staff are admitted free with Texan ID cards.

The program includes Dvorak’s Piano Quintet in A Major, Op. 81, which will be performed by the quartet and pianist Dr. Leslie Spotz, assistant professor of piano at Tarleton. Dohnanyi’s Quartet No. 3 in A minor, Op. 33 and Hungarian Dances of Johannes Brahms will round out the evening.

Spotz enjoys a national and international solo career that has included performances at the Tchaikovsky Hall of Moscow University, the South Bank Center of London, Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., the Academy of Music in Philadelphia, the inaugural opening of Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center, as well as several tours in Germany.

“Carpe Diem String Quartet performed here before in January 2007,” Spotz said. “They were so well received then, and I am particularly thrilled that this illustrious group is able to return this January.”

Carpe Diem consists of violinists Charles Wetherbee and John Ewing, violist Korine Fujiwara and cellist Diego Fainguersch. Together, these talented musicians have formed a premier chamber ensemble.

Currently in residence at Ohio Wesleyan University, the quartet has captured the imagination of audiences, the respect of critics and is becoming one of the most versatile ensembles of its generation.

This season, Carpe Diem continues several ambitious projects including the complete recordings of the nine string quartets of Sergey Taneyev on the Naxos label, collaboration with Columbus Dance Theater and a joint project “The String Machine,” which aired on WOSU-PBS television through 2007-08.

Founding members Wetherbee, Fujiwara, along with Ewing and Fainguersch, who both joined the group in 2008, each hold an impressive resume as chamber musicians, garnering acclaim from critics around the world.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University recently released the results of the Student Research Symposium held on its campus on Nov. 1. Students from the university who participated in the symposium presented high-quality research projects that they had worked on.

Awards were given to the top presentations in each of three categories. These categories included poster presentations, undergraduate oral presentations and graduate oral presentations.

The first-place award for poster presentations went to Clifford Terrel. His adviser was Dr. Linda Schultz, of chemistry and geosciences. Second place went to Andrew Foote, who was accompanied by adviser Barry Lambert of animal sciences.

The undergraduate oral presentations first-place award went to Jordan Sparkman and adviser Dr. Russell Pfau of biological sciences. Rachel Seay, with the help of Pfau, took home the second-place award.

Jessica Castaneda-Gill and adviser Dr. Harold Rathburn, of biological sciences, received the first-place award in graduate oral presentations. The second-place winner was Prashant Amatya. Her adviser was Mark Yu, of agribusiness, agronomy, horticulture and range management.

Tarleton President F. Dominic Dottavio provided $1,000 scholarships to each of the three first-place winners.

The Student Research Symposium was a success. Former Tarleton president Dennis McCabe attributes much of that success to Dr. Beth Rinard, Symposium Committee Chairperson.

“The symposium required a heavy dose of Rinard’s touch and leadership,” McCabe said. “This accomplishment should put [Tarleton] students in great position at Commerce next week at the TAMUS research conference.”

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—A Tarleton State University professor and two Stephenville Independent School District (SISD) physical education instructors recently spoke about a collaborative fitness effort at a convention in Austin.

Dr. Joe Gillespie, Jill Heupel and Wade Whitehead were invited to speak about FITNESSGRAM, a partnership between Stephenville ISD and Tarleton, at the Texas Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Convention in Austin on Feb. 9.

The fitness collaboration began during the 1980s with Gillespie taking his Tests and Measurements class to Gilbert Intermediate School to assist the public schools with health-related fitness testing.

Senate Bill 530 was passed in 2008 and mandated that all public schools in the state assess the health-related fitness of students in grades three through 12. SISD and Tarleton have been the leaders in the state with the implementation of the law, and many surrounding school districts have looked to the collaboration for assistance.

Heupel, Whitehead, Mary Pack, Emma Jimenez, D’Anna Green and Mike Carroll from SISD have worked with Tarleton students to implement the program.

For many years, students in Dr. Gillespie’s class have administered the FITNESSGRAM to all students in grades four through six. Now, the collaboration involves second through 12th grade.

Following testing of students, a fitness report card is issued for each public school student.

Developed by the Cooper Institute in Dallas, the FITNESSGRAM test measures three areas of fitness: aerobic capacity, body composition, muscle strength, endurance and flexibility. The test results help parents and physical education teachers identify students whose poor fitness may compromise their heath and education.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University is making new additions and changes to the Dick Smith Scholarship for the College of Science and Technology and College of Liberal and Fine Arts.

For the current scholarships, incoming freshman must be ranked in the top 25 percent of their class and have an ACT composite of 25 or higher or SAT total of 1100 or higher. Returning students must complete at least 15 hours each semester and have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.2 for the current semester and cumulative average. The current budget for the scholarship account is $195,000 and each student is awarded $3,000.

Due to investment income and oil royalties, Tarleton has additional funds to add two new components for the ‘09-10 academic school year. Both colleges will award two Dick Smith Premiere Scholarships for incoming freshmen and each college will have three new graduate scholarships to award.

The Dick Smith Premier Scholarship will be $9,000 per student. Each student must major in the College of Science and Technology or the College of Liberal and Fine Arts. Applicants must be ranked in the top 25 percent of their graduating class and have an ACT composite of 30 or higher or an SAT total of 1350 or higher.

To be eligible for the graduate scholarships, new graduate students must have a 3.2 graduate GPA and returning graduate students must have a 3.5 graduate GPA. Graduate applicants must also enroll in six hours of graduate work for the College of Science and Technology or the College of Liberal and Fine Arts.

To apply for all Tarleton scholarships, including the Dick Smith Scholarship, submit the general scholarship application available at www.tarleton.edu/~scholars before Feb. 15, 2009.

Gary Nabors - Stephenville Fire Marshall

Stephenville Fire Marshal Gary Nabors was arrested Thursday afternoon at his office and charged with online solicitation of a minor after a week long investigation.

Erath County District Attorney Jason Cashon said conviction of the second-degree felony carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. He declined to provide details of the case.

Nabors has been Stephenville’s fire marshal since 1986. He started working for the city in 1979 and has worked in several departments. He’s now on administrative leave.

Nabors was jailed on $50,000 bond late Friday afternoon, and jail records had no attorney listed for him.

KILLEEN-Tarleton State University-Central Texas will hold a nursing information session about its Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. The University offers the Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) to BSN and the Registered Nurse (RN) to BSN programs.

ZAPATA, TEXAS—On Jan. 19 the Tarleton State University team of John Anderson and Tanner Morgan, both of Stephenville, won the inaugural National Guard FLW College Fishing Texas Division tournament on Falcon Lake Saturday with a five-bass catch weighing 29 pounds, 13 ounces. The victory earned the team a $5,000 college scholarship as well as a $5,000 club college scholarship.

“We knew that the morning bite was pretty crucial to catch some big fish,” Anderson said. “We were originally going to go down toward the dam. We had a spot where we could put six fish in the boat real fast, but they would only be six fish for 12 pounds.

“Instead, we started on our big fish spot and right off the bat started catching fish,” the 19-year-old junior added.

Anderson said after catching a three- and four-pound fish, the size improved and the team boated a six-pounder and a fish he estimated at 10 pounds.

Anderson said the team targeted fish feeding up and down banks under cloud cover early in the day, but when the sun appeared from behind clouds around noon, the fish moved to deeper brush piles and became easier to catch. Anderson said he and Morgan used 3/8-ounce and 1/2-ounce Texas-rigged watermelon creature baits and watermelon-colored Lake Fork Tackle Hyper Freaks to catch their fish. Anderson said the team caught 15 to 20 fish throughout the course of the day.

“All of our fish were just solid keepers,” Anderson said. “Falcon Lake is unreal. It’s without a doubt the best bass fishery in Texas, if not the country. The fish are big, they’re mean and they’re fun to catch.

“It was a real honor to win the first FLW College Fishing event,” Anderson added.

Rounding out the top five teams are University of Louisiana – Cody McCrary of Baton Rouge, La., and Neil Arnaud of Carenco, La. (six bass, 25-05, $2,500 college scholarship, $2,500 club college scholarship); Lamar University – Matt Morrison of Silsbee, Texas, and Danny Iles of Hemphill, Texas (six bass, 24-06, $2,000 college scholarship, $2,000 club college scholarship); University of Texas – Bobby Frey of Cedar Park, Texas, and Bill Waldschmidt of Austin, Texas (six bass, 22-10, $1,500 college scholarship, $1,500 club college scholarship); LSU – Joel Jackson of Baton Rouge, La., and Logan Mount of Leesville, La. (six bass, 21-13, $1,000 college scholarship, $1,000 club college scholarship);

FLW Outdoors announced the College Fishing trail in May 2008. The entire schedule, which is organized around the five Stren Series Divisions can be found by visiting CollegeFishing.com, along with the rules, requirements and information on how to create a bass club.

Full-time students enrolled in four-year colleges or universities are eligible to participate in the events. Schools in each division can send two-person teams to each of the four qualifying events in their division, with each event limited to a maximum of 40 teams. Each team will have an opportunity to win $10,000 for first and $2,000 through fifth place. The prize money will be split evenly between the winning team’s club and the school they represent. The tournaments are free to enter, boats and drivers will be provided and all collegiate teams will receive a travel allowance. The top five teams in each of the qualifying events will advance to one of five televised three-day FLW National Guard Regional Championships.

Each school represented in a televised Regional Championship will have team shirts and boats provided by Ranger. The purse for each Regional Championship will be a Ranger 177TR with a 90-horsepower Evinrude or Yamaha outboard wrapped in school colors for the winning club and $25,000 for the school they represent. Awards of $6,000 will also extend through fifth place for the club and school to split evenly.

The FLW National Guard College Fishing National Championship will be a three-day televised event hosting the top five teams from each regional, 25 total teams. The teams will be provided with team shirts and wrapped Ranger boats towed by Chevy trucks for this competition. The purse for the championship will range from $25,000 cash and a Ranger 177TR with a 90-horsepower Evinrude or Yamaha outboard wrapped in school colors and $50,000 for the school they represent to $15,000 for fifth, split between the club and school.

The winning team will be declared the FLW National Guard Collegiate National Champion and will qualify for the $2.5 million Forrest Wood Cup presented by BP and Castrol in 2010. The winners will also receive use of a wrapped boat and Chevy truck for the Forrest Wood Cup.

Total awards are based on a full field of 40 boats in every tournament.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—At the Texas Council on Family Relations (TCFR) Annual Conference, Dr. Richard Sale, associate professor of human sciences at Tarleton State University, was honored with one of the organization’s highest honors—the Moore-Bowman Award. The award is given annually to someone for his or her “Outstanding Service and Continuing Support of Families and Family Life in Texas.”

This year’s conference, “Promoting Healthy Families: Managing Work-Life Interactions,” was held in Dallas on March 26-27.

Sale is currently a TCFR board member as well as a past president. He currently is the president of the Affiliate Councils Board of the National Council on Family Relations.

“Receiving this award is a great honor,” Sale said. “Although this award was for service to Texas families, everything I have done has been extremely rewarding. I also think that it represents the type of faculty we have at Tarleton and our involvement in service to our professions and communities.”

TCFR is a non-profit educational and resource organization devoted to promoting healthy families. Members include educators, researchers, counselors, social workers, health care professionals, therapists, judges, attorneys, clergy, students and interested laypersons. Founded in 1946, TCFR has facilitated the work of its members in the interest of Texas families. It is a state affiliate of the National Council on Family Relations.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—The Tarleton Athletic Trainers Association (TATA) will host the 13th annual TATA Workshop on Jan. 24, 2009, at Tarleton State University’s Wisdom Gym.

Open to all high school students interested in areas of Athletic Training and Sports Medicine, the workshop, which runs from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., offers student trainers insight into basic sports medicine practices and promotes an interest in the profession.

Pre-registration is recommended by Jan. 19. Registration also will be available beginning at 9 a.m. before the event. There is a $10 fee for the workshop, which includes the cost of workshop materials, T-shirt, lunch and door prizes.

The workshop includes sessions on spinal cord injuries, MRSA/Universal precautions, fracture/dislocation care, the future of sports medicine, a day in the life of the athletic training student, spine board procedures, emergency splinting, emergency transportation and contests.

MRSA is a staph infection that affects the skin and is resistant to many common antibiotics. It is most commonly spread through an open wound, such as a superficial abrasion, but also can be transmitted through poor hand washing and personal hygiene, sharing personal items or failing to clean and disinfect exercise and training equipment.

It is suggested students wear clothing that allows them to move freely and participate in lab sessions.

The event is sponsored by the Tarleton Athletic Trainers Association, Dublin Dr Pepper, Stephenville Medical and Surgical Clinic and Surgical and the Endoscopic Center of Stephenville.

Last year’s workshop included 76 participants representing 13 schools.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University’s office of parent relations and the athletics department will host Parent’s Day Out on Feb. 28.

“Parents Day Out is a time for parents to join their student in a fun day of activities and educational programs,” said Lathes Towns, parent relations coordinator. “Parents are a vital part of their student’s life.”

The day will begin with a breakfast in the Thompson Student Center Ballroom A at 9 a.m. The day concludes with the women’s basketball game at 6 p.m. and the men’s basketball game against Angelo State at 8 p.m. in Wisdom Gym.

Lunch will be provided in the dining hall at noon. Visitors will be charged $5.90 for the meal and students may use meal plans to cover the cost.

Other events include a presentation by the Tarleton ROTC, a Tarleton Parent’s Association meeting, a free cook-off competition, a planetarium show and a production of “West Side Story” presented by the theater department.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—The popular “Dinner in the Stacks” series at Tarleton State University’s Dick Smith Library returns this spring on Sat., April 4.

Tickets to the dinner are $17.50 each for the general public and $15 each for members of the Friends of the Dick Smith Library. Appetizers will be served beginning at 6:30 p.m. and dinner starts at 7 p.m.



Hosted by the Friends of the Dick Smith Library, the event will feature “Historic Hotels of Texas Snow” by Liz Carmack. Her love for heritage travel and desire to provide travelers with a practical reference to Texas’ historical hotels inspired her to write the book.

Carmack traveled more than 20,000 miles across the state and visited more than 60 hotels during her research. She spoke with local historians, innkeepers and hotel guests and tracked down hotel details in archives, libraries and museums.

Carmack earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism from Oklahoma State University, master’s degree in mass communications from the University of Leicester, Leicester, England, and is a member of the Association for Women in Communications, the Writers’ League of Texas and Freelance Austin.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—A Russian folktale full of humor and good moral will take center stage at Tarleton State University during the Theatre at Tarleton’s Young People Series.

Children of all ages will be delighted with the “The Frog Princess,” which was written by Cathy Howard and will be directed by Amy Reynolds, a senior theatre major at Tarleton who will graduate in May.

Public performances will be held at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7, in the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center Auditorium. Tickets are $3 per person and available at the door.

In this entertaining adaptation of a Russian folktale, a vain, but loving queen—Queen Natasha—decides the time has come to pass the kingdom over to one of her three very different sons—Boris, Casimir and Sasha. But first, each must find a suitable bride—because behind every king is a great queen.

Struggling for the position of queen is a warrior princess named Ursula, a spoiled princess named Vass and a frog princess named Natalia. Since only the best wife may become queen, there are challenges to overcome and that is where the fun really begins. This very clever story teaches the lesson of forgiving one another and how it pays to be kind to everyone—including frogs!

The cast includes Tarleton students KayLee Grant, Matt Cox, Darrel Glen Haynes, Tessa Reynolds, Trey Foster, Zane Heupel, Kati Pike, Alle Bird, Natasha Braswell and Caitlin Mills.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University’s recreational sports facility was recently honored by American School & University magazine. The publication highlighted the facility in its November 2008 issue as an outstanding architecturally designed facility.

American School & University magazine is an information source for education facilities and business professionals. Industry reports, surveys, new product introductions and case histories are provided in each issue.

“I’m not at all surprised to see that our recreational sports facility continues to be recognized,” said Dr. Wanda Mercer, vice president for student life. “The center has interesting angles and dimensions, is attractive to the eye and fits in very well in its setting. I believe it improves the landscape and I am very proud of its design.”

Completed in October 2007, the 72,000-square-foot facility includes classrooms and office spaces, three gym floors, a climbing wall, racquetball courts and men’s and women’s locker rooms—complete with lighted vanities and hairdryers. Another feature of the recreational center is the “outdoor pursuit” area, which allows students the opportunity to sign up for outdoor items such as kayaks, tents and camping equipment.

Tarleton State University-Central Texas will hold a nursing information session Wednesday, April 1 about its Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. The University offers the Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) to BSN and the Registered Nurse (RN) to BSN programs.

The come-and-go session will be held Wednesday, April 1 at 4:00pm in room 104 in the Southwest building at Tarleton-Central Texas.

Carolyn Prosise, Nursing Coordinator at Tarleton-Central Texas, will provide comprehensive information on how to apply for the programs and to Tarleton-Central Texas, what courses and prerequisites need to be taken, as well as other pertinent information. STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Dr. Joe R. Christopher, professor emeritus of English at Tarleton State University, attended the Mary Hardin-Baylor University’s Writers Festival on Jan. 7-10.

Christopher is one of the two contributing editors of “Windhover: A Journal of Christian Literature,” which is released at the festival each year. This year marked the 13th issue of the journal. Christopher’s review of two books of interviews of Christian writers appeared in it. Last summer he was one of the three editors who read and evaluated the submissions of fiction, poetry and creative non-fiction for publication in the journal.

In addition to work on the journal, Christopher read two works at the festival. On the first evening, when authors were reading recently published works and telling of their recent work, he read “Shpuch and Shtaj,” a reshaping of a Mayan myth, which appeared in “The Mythic Circle” in August 2008. (He also read this work at the Langdon Weekend last September.)

The next day Christopher read the first third of “The Minyae,” a sonnet sequence retelling in an updated way episodes of the Greek myth of Jason’s quest for the Golden Fleece.

“I may have seemed out of step with the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor when I read two works about pagan myths, but the festival is not limited to Christian writings, unlike the journal,” Christopher said. “Last year I read some Christian poems at the festival, and no doubt I will read more some other year. I just happened to be working on mythic topics this past year.”
